Dr. James Fredrick Wenz
Dr. Wenz wrestled for Sommerville High School and was a three year starter as well as Captain his Senior Year. He did postgrad work at Blair Academy before receiving his B.S. degree in biomedical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1987. It was on to John Hopkins where he would earn his Doctorate in 1991 specializing in Joint Reconstruction Surgery. He then did a one year fellowship under Dr. David Hungerford joining the Hopkins faculty in 1997. He was a fellow at the Academy of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons,where he studied the care of geriatric patients. His concentration on total hip and knee replacements, the treatment of osteonecrosis, failed joint replacements, and cartilage transplantation were ground breaking in the field of medicine. In 2004 Dr. Wenz and his wife Linda were killed in an automobile accident and the Wenz Orthopedic Unit at John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center was named in his honor in 2006.
